150 protest against cuts at MMU

A demonstration was held at the MMU on Wednesday 10th February with around 150 people turning up. The majority of workers there were UNISON with some students turning up.

The demo does at least seem to have boosted the morale of the Unison activists. Management had banned the demo from occupying any of their property, even areas  around buildings. The demo as a small act of defiance did move onto an area that the MMU had denied them access. There were security in attendance but they did not intervene.

Manchester Metropolitan University to cull support jobs - PersonnelToday.com

Plans by Manchester Metropolitan University for 127 job cuts across a number of support areas have been met with outrage by the union UNISON. “We believe that our members are being made to pay for years of mismanagement… Unison MMU will not stand for our members’ livelihoods being taken away. The proposed job cuts will affect the whole university. They will have an adverse impact on students and will severely damage the university’s relationship with the surrounding communities.” The union Unite said it would fully support any action taken by Unison. Management have begun consultations with unions.
