The all-out attack on the living standards of ordinary people has started with higher education. Across the UK, universities are threatened by thousands of redundancies, withdrawal of courses and services. But education workers and students are organising resistance to the cuts. This site is sponsored by the Education Workers Network and aims to bring together education workers and students organising against higher education cuts at different universities.
If you work or study in any of the universities under threat, please contribute to this site to let others know - just get in touch with us. more...

Conference: Defeating Cuts in Education

As a new government is getting ready to attack the living conditions of ordinary people, students and education workers have already had experiences with cuts - and how we can stop them. We will try to draw the lessons from the strikes, occupations and other forms of direct action taken in HE and FE over the last months. How can we build effective alliances between students and workers? How can we act in solidarity across education establishments? How can we organise from below to defend education?

150 protest against cuts at MMU

A demonstration was held at the MMU on Wednesday 10th February with around 150 people turning up. The majority of workers there were UNISON with some students turning up.

The demo does at least seem to have boosted the morale of the Unison activists. Management had banned the demo from occupying any of their property, even areas  around buildings. The demo as a small act of defiance did move onto an area that the MMU had denied them access. There were security in attendance but they did not intervene.

Flash Occupation in solidarity with education workers at Sussex University

Over 100 students have occupied a conference centre at the University of Sussex in Brighton against proposed course cuts and job losses. The action comes after weeks of concerted campaigning during which the university management have failed to take away the threat of compulsory redundancies and course cuts.

The students described their action as "a display of support and solidarity for the UCU’s upcoming strike ballot. Furthermore, we stand in solidarity with all other workers at Sussex taking action against the cuts."
